Sometimes those are simply traits. And sometimes they’re not. Sometimes they’re coping strategies a body learned in order to survive pain, fear, or unpredictability — and over time, they’ve become so familiar we stop questioning them.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">That’s the tricky part about trauma. It doesn’t always feel like something <em>that happened</em>. It feels like who you are.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">And when we believe that, we bring it straight into our relationships. We defend our reactions. We label our partner’s responses as flaws. We argue about character when what’s actually happening is protection. Here’s what I want you to remember: </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;"><em><strong>You are not your trauma response. And neither is your partner. Everything you do makes sense in context. Every reaction has a reason. But coping is not the same thing as identity.</strong></em></p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">Relationships change when we start meeting each other with that awareness. When anger is met with curiosity instead of blame. When shutdown is recognized as overwhelm, not indifference. It means adding empathy to the moment — for yourself and for the person you love. Healing doesn’t remove parts of you. It softens the grip of what’s trying to keep you safe. New year, new you, big promises, big energy. And honestly? I think resolutions are a little passé. There’s nothing magically different about January 1st compared to December 31st. You can start a new habit on a Tuesday afternoon in March if you want. Waiting for a date to give you permission to change often keeps us stuck longer than we need to be.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">What I <em>do</em> love, though, is the “word of the year” trend.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">For me, a word isn’t about rules or pressure. It’s an anchor. Something to come back to when I get swept up in the moment, distracted, reactive, or pulled off course. A word gently reminds me what actually matters.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">In 2025, our word was “<strong>Pause”</strong>.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">That choice came after a very intense and destabilizing business event in 2022 that left me carrying PTSD in my body. During that time, decisions had to be made fast—sometimes instantly—and we had very little control. That urgency stuck around through 2023 and well into 2024. Even when I understood <em>why</em> my body was reacting the way it was, awareness alone wasn’t enough to slow the momentum. It felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground. Just go. Just decide. Just get it done.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">The problem? That leftover trauma kept pushing us into fast, fear-based, and sometimes impulsive decisions. In 2024, that cost us time, energy, and money. We were stuck in a chronic state of flight  and appeasement.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">So in 2025, we chose to “honor the pause”.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">And wow—what a ripple effect.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">Pausing before decisions (big and small, business and personal) forced us to slow down enough for our nervous systems to catch up. The nervous system <em>loves</em> slow. Slow creates safety. Slow allows information to land. We paused around money, our relationship, our home, everything. It felt grounding to say, “This sounds good—let’s sit with it and see how it feels later.”</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">Interestingly, when truly urgent or dangerous situations <em>did</em> arise, I noticed something surprising: I was calm. Clear. Connected. Panic felt like momentum, urgency felt like clarity, and fear faded into the background. My wife and I moved as a team—no words needed. Our nervous systems communicated effortlessly. Afterward, we held each other, processed what came up, reflected, and stayed deeply connected. That kind of vulnerability builds intimacy and trust in a way nothing else can.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:1em;line-height:1.618em;margin:0 0 1.25em 0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-weight:700;">For 2026, I don’t have a word yet. That’s ok, because I stopped putting pressure on myself especially around social constructs such as arbitrary timelines.
